I had different plans for the week but when you are a treasure hunter sometimes the week has plans for you.
On my designated ORC day I woke up to find the most beautiful Facebook Marketplace listing for orbital granite...which I had been looking for for four years!! I had seen something similar a long time ago but I never committed to buying it and it eventually sold and I've been kicking myself ever since. So when I saw this listing we drove straight to it!
The kitchen already has a soapstone sink and so my plan was to use a butcher block for the rest of the counters but it was harder to find second hand than I anticipated. Most of the listings I saw were really beat up and icky.
Two amazing things about this granite, the first being the price, $60. The second being it is the exact size that I needed for the kitchen. We just needed to cut it into two pieces.
Next up we cleaned the old grout and caulk off the back edges.
Then we started to plot how to install it. We had a free base cabinet given to us from the person we bout the soapstone sink from so we decided to put it beside the stove and have a little open section to put a stool or garbage can...tbd.
I love the way the soapstone and granite play together. I almost always mix patterns in design so why not mix stones right? I still have to fix up the soapstone, it needs some oil and care but these two stones are perfect together.
Next up I will be painting the base cabinet under the granite the same white as the other cabinets so they all flow together. I wish I had done it before installing the granite but oh well.
The other piece will be going on the other side of the stove so I needed to google whether a fridge and stove can be next to each other, and they can! I wanted there to be a little overhang on the far side so we could sneak a second stool in there.
And that's all we had time for this week but it was a huge success! I am so thrilled with the granite, especially how lovely it is next to the soapstone sink. I am a happy girl!
Be sure to check out everyone else's progress on their ORC's! Thank you One Room Challenge and Apartment Therapy for hosting this amazing event!!
I hope everyone has a great week! See you soon!
That granite was meant to be. It sounds like a gift from the heavens that fell into your lap! I love the idea of mixing stones. I can't wait to see the finished room!
